“You’ll love being in America.
Not every day is good, most are hard.
But Montana is a good place for bad days.”
At 21, working as a hunting guide and cowhand in the Beaverhead National Forest sparked Barry’s love for Montana, its people, and history—awakening the storyteller within.
About Barry
Barry was born into a farming family in southwest Minnesota, where his childhood was shaped by the hard work of the land and the stories of his pioneer heritage. His grandparents’ first home was a sod house with dirt floors, and growing up on the original family homestead sparked a lifelong curiosity about history and the people who lived it.
In 1981, Barry came to Montana to attend the FWL Outfitters and Guide School near Hamilton. He guided hunters along the west fork of the Madison River and worked cattle in between seasons. Nearly a decade later, in 1990, he and his family settled in Fergus County, where he began a career at KXLO Radio. As a talk show host—well before the podcast era—he developed a knack for interviewing and drawing out the deeper stories of those around him.
Barry and his wife, Sheila, now make their home off-grid on a mountain south of Helena, where they live with their two dogs. He is the proud father of two grown sons and grandfather of two, still inspired by the land, history, and people of Montana.
